Prior to ‘97 all of my musical choices were influenced by my older cousin Toya or my Uncle (who was a DJ in my earlier years). I turned 11 in ‘97. I listened to everything (I still do). I was big into Cash Money and Boy Bands that year, lmao. Then it was Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Blink182, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Joe Burdens, Dipset, G-Unit, etc etc etc. I would always get blank stares at my musical choices. Either it wasn’t too girl friendly or too white for the black girl in the hood. I was a fan of the usual NY artists Jay, Big, Nas, Kim, Foxy, DMX but a lot of the shit I listened too would get me the crazy side eye, lol. I generally was ahead of the curve tho. Before many of these artists had a buzz. I remember putting niggas on to Cash Money, Fabolous, Joe Buddens, Stack Bundles.

Its funny tho. I use to be ahead of the curve. But now… now I am content with not knowing the new, knowing what’s out there now. It really doesn’t impress me. At first I was like am I getting old, am I losing touch with my first love.
